Bunny Enrichment 101

January 15, 2023

Did you know that one of the most common bunny care mistakes is not providing entertainment? Bunnies are very inquisitive and playful by nature, and will get quite bored with nothing to do but sit in their cages all day. It’s important to provide your furry friend with ways to entertain herself. In this article, a Bourne, MA vet offers some advice on providing Floppy with the enrichment she needs to thrive.

Provide A Play Zone

One of the first things rabbit owners learn is the importance of petproofing. You don’t necessarily have to bunny proof your entire house. One option is to bunnyproof one or more specific rooms. Make this area both safe and fun for your pet! You’ll need to address potential dangers, such as small or sharp items. However, you can also incorporate  some entertaining features. Provide Floppy with an ottoman to hop on or a toy box to dig through.

Toys

Bunnies enjoy toys just as much as dogs and cats do! Floppy is very fond of investigating things. She also likes games that allow her to jump, dig, and sniff things. Make sure your furry pal has a fun variety of toys! You’ll also want to rotate them out frequently to keep things fun and fresh. If you have more than one rabbit, make sure that you have plenty to go around, so your pets don’t have to compete for things. You don’t have to break the bank buying rabbit playthings: you can make many of your bun’s playthings yourself. Look online for ideas and instructions. Just stick with things that are both safe and suitable.

Play Games

Many bunnies actually enjoy playing with their humans. Try playing games with Floppy! Bowling is a great option. Your pet may also enjoy scavenger hunts! You can also try things that incorporate grooming and training into play sessions.

Incorporate Food

If there was one thing that most of our patients are unanimously fond of, it’s food. Incorporating treats into Floppy’s playtime will definitely increase the odds of you earning binkies. Hang leafy greens from a piece of twine, or crumple up a paper ball around some yummy snacks. Just be sure to stick with safe options. Ask your vet for recommendations.
