We may have another week before the official start of spring, but it’s warming up quickly. This time of year can get a bit sloppy, as rain and melting snow make for some soggy weather. If you have a dog, you may be dealing with a bit of a mess until things dry out. A Bourne, MA vet offers some tips on this below.
Keep a towel or some pet wipes near the door. This will come in handy when Fido has to go out in the rain.
Put a thick mat near the door you and Fido go in and out of. This can help keep your furry friend from tracking mud into the house. Bath mats work great for this, as they hold water well and are quite thick.
If you don’t have an electric or steam mop, or a spray mop, you may want to pick one up. These make cleaning up those muddy pawprints much easier!
Keep a spray bottle with water and a washcloth near the door, and get into the habit of wiping your canine buddy’s paws down before you bring him in. There are also tools you can buy that will do this for you. You may actually be able to teach Fido to wipe his furry feet on a mat!
You may also find yourself dealing with some extra fur as Fido changes into his summer wardrobe. Get into the habit of brushing your pooch daily. When it’s warm enough, take him outside, so that dead fur just blows away.
Speaking of fur, you may find Fido’s on, well, everything. Vacuum high traffic spots and your pet’s favorite lounging spots daily. Even a quick once-over will help. You can use a squeegee, damp sponge, or rubber dish glove to remove hair from furniture and upholstery.
Many pups don’t spend much time outside in winter. Fido will be more than happy to return to his favorite trails and parks. Make sure that he is current on his vaccines and parasite control!
Some dogs (we’re looking at you, Golden Retrievers) love splashing around in puddles. If Fido loves mud, consider making a dog-washing station outside.
