Be Kind to Animals Week

May 01, 2021

Be Kind To Animals Week starts May 2nd. While we think animals always deserve kindness and compassion, it’s always great to signal-boost awareness about this topic. As it turns out, there are some very small but significant things you can do that will benefit all of our animal companions. A local Bourne, MA vet lists some of them in this article.

Don’t Litter

Littering may not seem like a huge deal, but it really is very detrimental. It’s particularly dangerous in this area. Unfortunately, a lot of our local litter finds its way into the ocean, where it can kill fish and birds. Consider volunteering to help clean up Cape Cod’s beautiful beaches.

Donate To Charity

Another thing you can do is support animal welfare through donations. It doesn’t have to be anything huge: every little bit helps! Here at Sandwich Animal Hospital, we support some great local rescue organizations. However, there are many more to choose from.

Shop Wisely

Keep our animal companions in mind when you go shopping, and opt for cruelty-free brands. This can get a bit tricky. For instance, palm oil is one reason that so many forests are being destroyed, which is decimating the natural habitats of many animals, including orangutans. This doesn’t mean you need to go all-out and research every single product you buy. Start with one type of product at a time. For instance, you can find a list of cruelty-free health and beauty products here.

Create Natural Habitats

Do you have your own place? No matter how big or small your home is, there are things you can do to help promote good animal welfare. If you have a yard, set out some features for native birds. Birdbaths, bird feeders, and bird houses can all help our feathered friends. You can also add colorful plants to attract and feed pollinators. Limiting your use of harsh chemicals will help as well.

Foster

Did you know that almost 8 million pets end up in shelters every year? Those numbers are both heartbreaking and mind-boggling. Many rescues and shelters run on shoestring budgets, and rely heavily on volunteers. Consider helping them out a bit by volunteering or even fostering. Of course, adopting a pet is also a wonderful option!
