July 31st Is National Mutt Day

July 15 2022

Happy National Mutt Day! On the 31st of this month we celebrate all the wonderful things about mixed-breed dogs. Mutts or mixed breed dogs are adorable and loyal, and they have their own unique personalities. Read on as a vet talks about National Mutt Day and why mixed breed dogs are the best dogs.

Healthy Mutts

You might not know it, but mixed-breed dogs are actually healthier than purebreds. That’s right: mixed-breed dogs are less likely to develop health problems like hip dysplasia or heart disease than their purebred counterparts.

In fact, mixed breed dogs are the best dogs, and here’s why:

  • They’re just as loyal as purebreds. As long as you treat them with love and respect, they’ll do anything for you.
  • They don’t have any problems with allergies! Allergies are common in purebreds because they’re bred to have certain traits like a curly coat or floppy ears, but if you get a mutt, their coat won’t be curly or floppy—it’ll just be whatever it is! And their ears will probably be normal-shaped too!
  • They’re so much more affordable than purebreds! You can get an adorable puppy for just $1 on National Mutt Day (or adopt an adult dog who has been waiting for forever in animal shelters).

How Do I Observe National Mutt Day?

There are many ways that you can celebrate National Mutt Day, but one of the best ways is to spend some time with your dog. If you have time off work or school, consider taking them to the park or hiking through the woods. If you’re busy with work or school and don’t have time to go outside, consider taking them for a long walk around the block or just sitting down in your backyard and petting them while they sniff around at random things on their way back inside after doing their business outside (or while they are sleeping).

Other ways people choose to observe this holiday include:

  • Making homemade dog treats
  • Getting involved in local rescue organizations
  • Spending time volunteering at shelters
  • Buying gifts for other dogs’ owners
  • Creating art about how much you love your dog
  • Writing letters

So we celebrate our canine friends who have been by our sides through thick and thin for years (or even decades!). They’re not just family members—they’re our best friends!

If you want more information on how to get involved or wish to schedule a checkup for your pooch, call us, your local vet today.
