It’s almost Thanksgiving! We are very grateful for our canine companions. Dogs really do complete our families, and turn our houses into homes. However, Fido does have a habit of getting into mischief, so you’ll need to keep an eye on him. A Bourne, MA vet offers some advice on this below.
Make sure that Fido is clean, fresh-smelling, and ready for the big day. A dirty, stinky dog won’t make a very good impression! You’ll also want to dust and vacuum thoroughly, change your air filters, and wash your furry pal’s bedding.
Fido definitely deserves a special treat. He can have some of that turkey, though you’ll need to remove the skin, bones, and fat first. Your canine pal can also have most types of plain, boneless meat, fish, or poultry. Some side dishes, such as sweet potato, spinach, and pureed pumpkin, are also safe. Just don’t give him anything that isn’t safe for dogs. That list includes garlic, onion, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; alcohol; avocado; pitted fruits; meat on the bone; raw dough; and anything that contains xylitol.
If your pooch is in his golden years, you can probably skip this one. However, if Fido is still a furry bundle of energy, you may want to give him a good doggy workout in the morning, to tire him out a bit. Afterwards, he’ll hopefully spend the day peacefully napping, collecting ear scritches, and angling for treats, rather than getting into mischief.
Are you having company over? Ask people not to feed Fido without checking with you. This will help prevent mishaps of someone accidentally giving him something that isn’t safe for him. Many pups get a bit too enthusiastic about their door doggy duties. If your pooch gets overexcited when greeting people, put him in another room with bedding, food, toys, and treats as guests are coming and going. (Tip: If your guests have allergies, get extra tissues and OTC meds.)
We’re definitely grateful for dogs, and all of the love and companionship they offer. Enjoy some quiet time with your furry best friend. Bringing your canine buddy for a walk is a great way to walk off that food coma!
