Senior Cat Care

July 15 2020

Did you know that kitties are considered seniors as young as age 8? Our feline buddies usually age gracefully, so you won’t notice drastic changes happening overnight. Fluffy will still be adorable as she enters her golden years, but she will need some extra TLC. Here, a Bourne, MA vet offers some tips on keeping a senior kitty happy, healthy, and purring.

Food

Obesity is a big concern with older kitties. Pay close attention to your pet’s waistline! If you know or suspect that Fluffy is, well, not just fluffy, ask your vet for specific advice. (Note: sometimes cats gain weight due to health issues. If your pet is getting pudgy, contact your vet.)

Napping Spots

Comfy beds are a must for cats of all ages! Put beds for Fluffy in various rooms, so she has options.

Grooming

Cats are very clean, and will groom themselves every day. However, Fluffy may have trouble reaching her entire body, especially if she is stiff and sore. Brushing your pet regularly will help keep her clean and comfy.

Playtime

Your furry pal may not be as playful as she once was, but she’ll still have she’ll still have times when she wants to let her inner kitten out. Take a few minutes a day to play with Fluffy! This will help keep her fit and provide her with beneficial mental stimulation.

Night Lights

Fluffy may have trouble with her vision as she ages. Keep a night light on after dark.

Kitty Facilities

We recommend getting a litterbox with low walls. This will be easier for Fluffy to climb in and out of. If you have more than one floor, make sure your feline buddy has bathrooms on every level. That way, she won’t have to use the stairs as much.

Stairs

Senior cats sometimes have trouble jumping up to their favorite napping spots. Arrange footstools or ottomans so Fluffy can use them as stairs. Or, give your furry friend a lift. Just be very gentle whenever you pick her up or put her down.

Love

Cats are always happiest when they feel loved and cared for. You may also find that Fluffy gets extra affectionate as she grows older. Pay lots of attention to your kitty, and keep that motor going!
