Winter is here! It’s always nice to settle in on a frigid night with a good book or movie and your feline pal purring on your lap. Although Fluffy is quite independent, you will want to take a few steps to keep her comfortable when it gets cold. Here, a local Bourne, MA vet offers advice on caring for your cat in winter.
Keep Kitty In
The best thing you can do for Fluffy this winter is to keep her inside. Cold weather is just as much as a threat to cats as it is for people! Kitties can and do get frostbite, especially on their ears and the tips of their tails. Snow is also very dangerous for cats, especially once it gets deep. Plus, because snow tends to mask scents, cats are more likely to lose their way if they wander too far. If you do let your pet out, bring her in before dark. Also, make sure she has an emergency shelter, such as a tote with a hole cut in one side.
Beds
Cats certainly are drowsy! Fluffy will somehow manages to sleep even more than usual in cold, dreary weather. Make sure your kitty has lots of comfy beds to snuggle up in. For extra purrs, get her a thermal bed. Your feline overlord will also like it if at least one of her beds gets sunbeam exposure.
Fireplaces/Heaters
Fireplaces, candles, and potpourri burners can all give your home a warm, cozy glow. Just make sure that your pet can’t reach any flames. You don’t want Fluffy sticking her tail in a candle or getting singed by fire!
Light
It gets dark early at this time of year. If Fluffy stays home by herself while you go to work, turn a light on before you leave. That way, she won’t be left alone in a dark, quiet house.
Parasite Control
Parasites are a problem all year long. As it gets cold, fleas and ticks will try to get indoors. Keep up with Fluffy’s preventative care products, and remember to wash her bedding regularly.
Water
Dehydration can sometimes be an issue in winter. Some cats prefer drinking running water, so you may want to get your furry pal a kitty fountain.
