Adopting A Shelter Dog

October 1 2019

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! This is one cause we are always happy to shed light on. If you’re ready to bring a new pooch into your life, please consider going through a shelter. A Sandwich, MA vet discusses adopting a shelter dog in this article.

Making A Difference

Adopting a shelter pup is definitely something to feel great about! You’ll be giving that one lucky dog a new lease on life and a second chance at happiness. You’re also helping the shelter care for its other furry wards, both by freeing up spaces and by helping fund them.

Finding Fido

Choosing a dog isn’t always easy. Sometimes, people know right away that they’ve found their pet. That isn’t always the case, though. You may find yourself trying to choose from a bunch of furry faces. Spend some time with Fido before deciding. Adopting is a lifetime commitment, so it’s important to make the right choice.

Coming Home

Fido may sleep a lot at first. This is normal. Being in a shelter is both stressful and scary for our canine pals. Your pup may just need to recuperate. If possible, set him up in a quiet area with bedding, food, water, toys, and treats. You’ll want to bring him to the vet within the first week or so, but other than that, just let him adjust.

History

In some cases, you can learn quite a bit about a shelter dog’s history. In other cases, there may not be any information available. Don’t be afraid to ask!

Personality

Fido may have some quirks you don’t know about yet. He may be terrified of storms, or have a habit of bolting after squirrels. Get a sturdy leash, and keep a good grip on it when walking your pooch.

Puppyproofing

Make your home safe for Fido by removing or securing anything that could be a hazard, such as small or sharp objects, plastic bags, and toxic plants. If you have a yard, make sure your fencing is secure.

Schedule

One of the first things you’ll want to do is take Fido to the vet. Aside from that, just focus on giving your pooch great TLC. It’s a beautiful thing to see shelter dogs happy and thriving.
