Safety Tips For Walking Your Dog

September 1 2019

Does your dog get super excited when you pick up his leash? Those daily strolls are important for many reasons beyond sanitation. They offer Fido a good workout, let him enjoy a change of scenery, and provide him with both entertainment and stimulation. Just be sure to put safety first. Read on for some great dog-walking safety tips from a Sandwich, MA veterinarian.

Get The Right Gear

Although collars are fine for most pups, some pooches, such as brachycephalic breeds and small dogs, should have harnesses instead. Ask your vet for specific advice. As for you, wear boots or sneakers with good tread, so you don’t slip and fall.

Paw Care

Dogs’ paw pads are very sensitive. In winter, snow, salt, sand, and ice can hurt your pet’s furry feet. In summer, Fido can burn his paws on hot surfaces. If you take your pup to the beach, you’ll need to watch for sharp rocks and shells. Keep your canine pal’s claws clipped, and use paw balm or wax to protect his feet.

Don’t Skip Training

Make sure Fido knows basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Lay Down, and Come. This is very important! If you drop the leash, you want to make sure your pooch won’t charge off after a squirrel.

Mind The Weather

Fido may be wearing a fur coat, but he’s not impervious to weather. Limit your canine buddy’s outdoor time when it’s really hot or cold out.

Nighttime

When walking Fido after dark, always bring a phone and flashlight with you. Also, stick to safe, well-let areas. Save the adventures and explorations for daylight!

Choose The Right Leash

Get a good leash, one that won’t snap if Fido lunges for the neighbor’s cat. Retractable leashes are great, but they can be dangerous in certain situations. You don’t want to use them on the side of a road: if the mechanism jams, Fido could run out into the street. He could also get tangled up with another dog. It’s best to save these for open areas.

Be Prepared

We recommend that all dogs be microchipped and wearing current ID tags. Fido should also be caught up on his vaccinations and parasite control products. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
